Ambiance & landscapes
The South Coast offers contrasting and wild landscapes. Matala's sheer cliffs contrast with Plakias' vast fine-sand beaches, swept by the meltemi. Agia Galini, nestled in its verdant valley, evokes a Provençal scene while Ierapetra spreads across a fertile plain planted with greenhouses and palm groves. Sunsets set the horizon ablaze each evening. Scents of sea salt, sage and eucalyptus permeate the air. This coastline alternates rocky coves and long sand strips, offering a preserved natural mosaic far from the tourist crowds of the island's north.
Things to see and do
Visit Matala's troglodyte caves, stroll Kourtaliotiko beach at Plakias, explore Agia Galini's old town and port, discover Ierapetra's Venetian fort, hike Preveli Gorge and swim at Damnoni beach. Diving enthusiasts will appreciate the clear waters around Gavdos island, accessible from Plakias. Ierapetra's local markets offer fresh fruit and vegetables daily.
Where to eat and drink
Tavernas serve fresh grilled fish, dakos with tomato and capers, marinated octopus and lamb simmered with herbs. Sample local graviera cheese and thyme honey. Regional rosé wines perfectly accompany mezze. At Plakias, seafront terraces offer Cretan salads drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. Honey and walnut pastries pleasantly complete meals.
Transport & access
Main access is from Heraklion Airport then by bus or car hire. Winding coastal roads link the villages yet require careful driving. Ferries serve Gavdos from Plakias in summer. KTEL buses run daily between Matala, Agia Galini and Ierapetra. Car hire remains the most comfortable solution for exploring isolated coves and distant sites.
